Every gemstone has a story. A diamond’s story begins deep underground and takes a billion years to write. Moissanite’s story is different — it begins in a laboratory and takes only a few weeks. And that is exactly what makes it so remarkable.
The Surprising Origin of Moissanite
Moissanite was discovered in 1893 by the French scientist Henri Moissan, who found tiny silicon carbide crystals in a meteor crater in Arizona. At first scientists thought they were diamonds. They weren’t — they were a completely different mineral, and natural moissanite is so rare it cannot be mined commercially.
That rarity is why nearly all moissanite today is grown in a laboratory. We don’t dig it out of the ground; we grow it, which means the stone’s origin is 100% traceable.
From Silicon Carbide to Crystal
Moissanite is made of silicon carbide. In the lab, a seed crystal is placed in a special chamber and heated to extreme temperatures while gases rich in silicon and carbon are introduced. Layer by layer, a boule — a tall, rough crystal — grows out of the seed. The entire process takes a few weeks, compared with the millions of years a diamond takes to form under the earth.
Because the growth is controlled, the resulting crystal can be made exceptionally pure and colorless — far more consistent than most natural gemstones.
Cutting, Faceting & the Brilliant Finish
Once the boule is grown, skilled gem cutters shape it into a gem with dozens of precisely angled facets. Moissanite’s refractive index (2.65) is actually higher than a diamond’s (2.42), which is why it throws so much rainbow fire in bright light. The cut determines how that light plays — a round brilliant maximizes sparkle, while shapes like emerald, oval and pear create their own character.
Why Lab-Created Is a Good Thing
- Ethical by nature — no mining, no conflict zones, no supply-chain questions.
- Durable — 9.25–9.5 on the Mohs scale, harder than sapphire and made for daily wear.
- Consistent quality — controlled growth means fewer inclusions and predictable color.
- Remarkable value — a moissanite ring typically costs a fraction of a comparable mined diamond. See our moissanite vs diamond comparison.
